Sabeto, Fiji – PKF Aliz Pacific, one of Fiji’s leading accounting firms, has announced a major philanthropic commitment of FJD $10,000 annually over the next five years to the District School of Sabeto, marking a significant investment in the future of education in the Betoraurau polity of the Ba Province.
This partnership is part of a broader and bold initiative led by the indigenous polity of Betoraurau to reform early childhood and primary education as a means to address an escalating education crisis in the province. The initiative aligns with the Vanua’s long-term vision to improve holistic academic performance across the region.
Recent data shared by the Ba Provincial Council Chairman, Ratu Meli Tora, reveals an alarming statistic: over 21,000 school-aged children in the province are currently not enrolled in school.
“A worrying trend that if not curtailed, will have far-reaching adverse effects in our polity, province, and even the nation,” said Pauliasi Natabe, Chairman of the Betoraurau Education Trust.
Recognising the urgent need for intervention, the Vanua of Betoraurau is rallying support from the business community in the western division.
“The polity of Betoraurau is tackling this crisis head-on, with the support of business communities. We welcome PKF Aliz Pacific as partners in this bold move to reverse the number of children left outside our education institutions,” Mr. Natabe added.
He further acknowledged the complexity of the issue:
“We recognise that there are varying reasons contributing to this crisis, and we take it upon ourselves as an indigenous polity to address it together, as one people. We are allocating budgets to support our education institutions and are sourcing partners like Aliz Pacific to support this noble initiative.”
The Vanua currently owns and operates one primary school with hostel amenities and three early childhood centres, servicing five villages. Plans are underway to construct a new primary school in the upper Sabeto Valley to cater to children in Korobebe and Navilawa villages.
“Education needs to be accessible, affordable, and relevant to the job market. We are developing our human capital through these investment initiatives, and we thank Aliz Pacific for generously considering the opportunity to join us as an education partner of Betoraurau.”
The donation by Aliz Pacific demonstrates a shared belief in the power of education to uplift and transform communities.
“The many children in our province who will benefit from this act of charity will be the legacy of this partnership between the Vanua of Betoraurau and Aliz Pacific. We sincerely thank Mr. Khan and the Board of Aliz Pacific for their trust in our education board and our Vanua to deliver quality education to the children of Betoraurau.”
“We look forward to building this relationship and taking it to greater heights over the coming years.”

•The District Head of School

• Momo na iVatawa
• Mutou riki na Turaga ni Yavusa

• Students,
•Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls.
Mu sa cola vina me and a very good morning to you all.
Firstly, I would like to sincerely acknowledge and thank the Head Teacher and School Management Committee for kindly inviting me to be your Chief Guest during this year’s Prefects’ Induction Ceremony.
I am so thankful, proud, and equally humbled by this great opportunity to be your chief guest at the institution that taught and contributed to where and who I am today!
It is also a great pleasure to be addressing you this morning as your Paramount Chief and the Patron of this beloved school.
As we gather here today, we are reminded of the rich history that laid the foundation for Sabeto District School. The school was founded by the vision of our forefathers. It was established to educate students of the Vanua o Betoraurau and those in Namaka and nearby villages. This visionary initiative has grown over the years, impacting countless lives and contributing to the educational landscape of the Vanua of Betoraurau and Fiji. This prestigious school was merely a seed in 1937. Today, it has become a mighty tree, producing leaders, entrepreneurs, academics, lawyers, pilots, teachers, nurses, pastors, professional rugby players, and influencers.
Ladies and gentlemen, I now turn your attention to the induction ceremony. To the Prefects of Sabeto District School 2024, that badge you wear will test who you really are. It is not a title. It is a responsibility. It gives you an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those around you. You have been chosen because you have qualities that inspire the trust of your teachers, the respect of your peers, and admiration from others. Your dedication to academic achievement, your compassionate nature, and your willingness to contribute to the betterment of your school have set you apart.
I was advised that the theme for this year’s prefects induction ceremony is “Using Your Gifts to Serve Others.” 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” Our Lord Jesus exemplified this as He came to the world, and rather than be served by others, he himself served others with kindness and humility. From healing those who were sick or possessed and washing the disciple’s feet to dying a gruesome death on the cross, Jesus shows us what real love and the heart of a servant truly look like.
Be the role models that your peers can look up to, and always strive to lead with empathy, kindness, humility, and understanding. Prefects are not there to bully and show their authority with arrogance. You should lead by example and obey the rules. Be respectful, show selfless behavior at all times, and please do not ever abuse the ‘authority’ vested in you as a prefect; just be yourself.
As prefects, you should remain focused and committed to your studies, but at the same time, be an inspiration to your peers by instilling in them a sense of duty and a sense of responsibility and achievement.
To the prefects: congratulations and well done.
At this juncture, ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to acknowledge, commend, and thank the head teacher, the teachers, members of the school’s administrative staff, and the school management for your untiring efforts and for giving your best in educating the children of the vanua o Betoraurau. Vina du valevu na qwaravi tavi.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank the Parents, Guardians and Old Scholar of the school for their unwavering and continued support and encouragement for your sons, daughters, and dependents to continue to excel in their studies and hopefully become very disciplined, well-educated, and productive members of society in the future.
Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to digress a little bit from the gist and thrust of my presentation to highlight my concern about the emerging threats that drugs bring about. Since assuming the role of the Momo Levu na Tui Sabeto, I have been very vocal and committed to trying to support our national effort to effectively combat the prevalence of drugs in our midst. Me da tu vata qa da tu qwata na kea valuti na wainimate ni vivamateni taki. Me ra lai vece o kora o luveida na kea revureavu qania na kea bura.

The government has provided an enabling environment for free education, and I urge that all parents ensure the full participation of their children and act as part of the wider community to ensure that all children are in school.
I firmly believe that education is the key to a better Sabeto and a better Fiji.
Teachers, your roles have never been more demanding than ever before. I know that the professional demands on you are ever-increasing and that you have to balance wellness and family life. I also know that for all of you, it is also satisfying as well as a challenging choice of profession. I humbly request your 101% commitment this year. The children of Sabeto need you.
Our year 8 results last year was our best thus far and it was indeed a great cause of concern. I now challenge all of us that are present here today to support our children, the teachers, and the school. We need to work together to ensure that we have a 100% pass rate this year. Sa kua na dure yaravi. Mu toso me meda lavetia cake vata na vatagedegede ni vuli ni ledu vanua. God does commend its blessing when we come together in unity. He rewards our collective efforts.
I once again congratulate all the student prefects for their selection today, and I wish all stakeholders, teachers, parents, and students the very best for the 2024 academic year.
Vina du Valevu!
God Bless you!
God Bless Sabeto!
And God Bless Fiji!

SVB will turn 20 days tomorrow and in marking 20-days the ThinkTank has designed appreciation cards to thank and acknowledge the contribution of businesses that have donated towards the hosting of the fundraising event.
Funds and services provided to host the event is valued at $10,000.00+ FJD.
SVB Chairman said that the Vanua o Betoraurau is immensely proud of these businesses, individuals and government organisations for their timely assistance.
“We are thankful for the kindness of business leaders and our government in helping us put together a very meaningful event for our people. An event that magnitude could not have been possible without the generousity of these organisations. The cards are but a small token of the vanua’s appreciation and really does not measure to their kindness.”
“We thank Kim Beddoes and the Beddoes family; they have always assisted the Vanua in many ways till today. We also thank Tai Mohd Sadiq’s family and Babu in particular for his unwavering support.”
Mr Naika also acknowledged Fiji Television and the crew of “Na i Katalau” who played a pivotal role in promoting the event to global viewers.
“I’m also thankful to the media organisations Fiji TV, CFL an FBC for covering and promoting the event. Malakai and Rupeni have been really great TV hosts they have worked alongside other radio hosts to promote the event like we never could and for that we remain thankful to every person involved.”
Fiji Police Force Jazz Band provided live music entertainment while other government departments through the Commissioner Western’s Office delivered programs throughout the day.
The organising committee is yet to officially declare the final amount collected which is currently set at $114,000+ FJD with other donors still pouring in funds towards the Vanua.

This coming Wednesday 9th August, Fiji will be celebrating with other UN member nations the International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples.
On 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples shall be observed on 9 August every year. The date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.
The Vanua o Betoraurau ThinkTank will propose to the Sigavou kei Betoraurau (SVB) Board of Trustees a week’s commemoration activities. An update of any activities in the Vanua to commemorate this event will be provided in a future media release.
Let us know in the comments section below your thoughts on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

In less than 12 hours, the Vanua o Betoraurau collected in excess of one hundred thousand Fijian dollars at the Siga Vou kei Betoraurau (SVB) fundraising event on Friday 28th July 2023.
The event was marked with joyous commemoration of the Vanua’s initiative by people of Betoraurau who turned up in numbers to the capital of Betoraurau.
The amount raised and the attendance signified the people’s support for pursuing good governance, development and financial security of the Vanua.
SVB Chairman Taniela Naika commended the camaraderie and unity of the Vanua towards the Siga Vou kei Betoraurau initiative and vision.
“We have taken a significant step forward.”
“I’m never more proud today seeing what we have achieved together for the future generations of Betoraurau. SVB is now a living memory of what we had only imagine many many years ago and I am blessed to live and witness this day” Mr Naika said.
“How this event and organisation will continue into the years after we are gone, will be for our future generations. We can be proud that we have taken the hardest task by initiating it” Mr Naika said.
Mr Naika remains optimistic about the future of the Vanua o Betoraurau and its people.
“There are great things to come for Betoraurau and her people, there will be hurdles to teach us along the way, and this Vanua will prosper when we remain united with God as our Sovereign” Mr Naika said.
SVB declared the amount of $114,348.15 FJD in donations to the Vanua at the conclusion of the event.
The Board of Trustees will meet on Monday 7th August to receive the organising committee’s SWOT analysis of the event and final declaration of donations received towards the event. The committee has also discussed its intention to visit every Yavusa to present a final report.
